Smoking cessation treatment: Efficacy and mechanisms (UWisc, Fiore/Baker).
Fiore, M.C., Bolt, D., McCarthy, D., Piper, M., Lawrence, D., Shiffman, S. & T. B. Baker. University of Wisconsin.

This presentation will focus on candidate mechanisms of counseling and pharmacotherapy effects. First, the importance of characterizing mechanisms will be discussed. Second, strategic considerations in modeling mechanisms or mediational processes will be reviewed. Third, data on mechanisms will be derived from ecological momentary assessment of variables such as negative affect, craving and other withdrawal symptoms, as well as positive affect and motivation level. Analyses will explore what treatment affects, and which effects are associated with abstinence. Results will be discussed in terms of what treatments do, and what they do not do. Finally, implications for the development of new treatments will be discussed.
