Determinants of invigorant consumption among adolescents

Objective: To study the parents’ and adolescents’ behaviors toward taking invigorants and related influential factors.


Methods: The parents of adolescents of 22 middle schools from 11 districts in Wuhan were selected by stratified group sampling. The data collection was based on the parents’ questionnaires.


Results: 28.5% of the fathers and 32.2% of the mothers ever took vitamins, herbs or other healthy food while 22.0% of the adolescents took vitamins and 21.2%of adolescents took herbs, Chinese medicine or other healthy food. As the educational level went up, especially above high school education, the percentages of the parents taking invigorants also increased. The three kinds of the occupations which the parents took invigorants at most were business owner, technician and administration operator. The educational level and occupation of the parents appeared to different influences on adolescents in taking invigorants.


Conclusions: Education level and occupation of the parents were important factors that directly affected the parents’ heavier toward invigorants.
